- For blind people, exercising can be difficult, from finding accessible equipment and gyms, to locating trainers, working out can be a daunting task. Historically, the blind have always been left out of the fitness world, there are not many options for us to get our work out on, most local YMCA’s are not set up for us, and staff are largely not trained to aid people who are disabled, including the blind. However, today is a different day for blind runners, thanks to Tom Panek’s new program “Running Guides,” which pairs our best friends with us, to get our work out on.
Tom Panek made history by running the NYC “Half Marathon,” with a series of running guide dogs. Tom’s inventive program is sponsored by “Guiding Eyes for the Blind,” and is breaking fitness barriers for blind runners. Even if we just want to “get our jog on,” and not compete in marathon’s, the program is great; there is a big difference in running outside in the world, compared to exercise bikes and treadmills.
